Everton could move for Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window on loan, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.
The Toffees have been charged with breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR) and they could lose more points, which will be a catastrophe to their survival hopes.
However, Sean Dyche continues to work wonders with the team, and the Toffees are looking to make one or two additions this month.
Phillips has made up his mind to leave Manchester City after dropping down the pecking order under Pep Guardiola. The 28-year-old seeks regular football, and City are willing to let him go out on loan, but they have set terms.
City want a loan fee – thought to be around £5m – and most, if not all, of his £135,000-per-week wages paid in full. Everton have already enquired about Phillips while Jacobs says West Ham, Crystal Palace and Newcastle could be interested as well.
“Kalvin Phillips still expected to leave Manchester City before the window shuts. Sources firmly deny Manchester City are insisting on an obligation to buy or that loan fee demands are too high,” wrote Jacobs on X.
“Understand City are actually open to a deal structure to suit all parties and relaxed because even a straight loan will help gain Phillips minutes and raised value come summer. Keep an eye on West Ham. Everton and Atletico Madrid have enquired. Roy Hodgson has also confirmed Palace’s interest.”
Bleak
If Everton are docked more points, it will become very difficult for them to recover. In that case, they will have to ditch all plans of getting Phillips on loan.
He would be a terrific addition, given his quality and experience. He was a hero at Leeds United but his move to Man City turned out to be a complete disaster.
Phillips needs a manager who will trust him once again. At Goodison Park, he will get more opportunities to play regularly and resurrect his career.
It doesn’t make sense for Everton to pursue a deal for Phillips on the current terms. They should only look to sign him if there’s is no fee involved.
