Fabrizio Romano shares update on Tottenham pursuit of Conor Gallagher

Tottenham Hotspur remain keen to sign Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher in the January transfer window, but nothing has been concrete yet, according to transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano

The Athletic claimed in December that Chelsea are willing to listen to offers for Gallagher who is also being targeted by Manchester United. Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio provided an update last week where he claimed that Spurs are in negotiation and looking to broker a deal for Gallagher and a fee in the region of £34m could be enough to secure his signature.

Romano says that there is no new conversation going on between the two clubs despite reports. He adds that the situation now is very much the same, and only an “important proposal” can change the situation. He is a key player for Chelsea and the Blues are happy to keep him.

“For now, guys, there is no conversation ongoing between Chelsea and Tottenham for Gallagher. Last summer, we know very well that Tottenham wanted the player, and they tried on Deadline Day to agree something with Chelsea, but it didn’t happen because Chelsea decided to say no to those conditions,” wrote Romano.

“The situation now is very much the same – only an important proposal can change the situation, or Chelsea are happy to continue with him. For Mauricio Pochettino he is an important player, and he’s always mentioning this in conversations with the directors at the club.

“Tottenham have been interested in Gallagher for some time, and Ange Postecoglou is also a big fan of the player. They remain interested in Gallagher, but they are not negotiating for him today. Let’s see what will happen in the next days and weeks, particularly as it will also be important to know if Spurs will keep Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who has interest from some clubs in Italy. After that we’ll see what’s next for Conor Gallagher.”

Interesting situation

Gallagher has been one of the top performers for the Blues this season and it comes as a big surprise to many that the Blues would let him go.

Ange Postecoglou is a big fan of the midfielder but as of now, Spurs are not negotiating a deal for the 23-year-old midfielder. However, the situation could change in the next few weeks.

It feels like the move is dependent on what Spurs plan to do with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who has interest from some clubs in Italy. Unless Spurs make room for new additions, they are unlikely to pay big money to land Gallagher even though he would be a fantastic signing.

Tottenham, currently, need to sign more than one central defender in the January transfer window. Cristian Romero is currently out injured while Micky van de Ven won’t be returning any time soon. They have been linked with a host of defenders in the past few months, and signing a new defender is their top priority at the moment.
