Liverpool keen to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi

Liverpool are heavily keen to sign Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, but they may have to wait until the summer to sign him.

According to a report from the Mirror, the Reds are looking to sign a new defender following the injury to Joel Matip and they have earmarked Guehi as their top priority target.

However, the Eagles have no intention to sell the 23-year-old defender. If the Reds want to sign him now, which looks unlikely, they will have to pay “silly money” to secure his signature.

The report says that Liverpool really “like” him, which means possibly they could move for him in the summer transfer window. Guehi is on £44k-per-week deal at Selhurst Park and has a contract at the club until 2026.

Replacement for Matip

Jurgen Klopp would have signed a new defender at the club last summer, but the situation forced him to prioritize other areas of the pitch, mainly the midfield.

However, the Reds will have to sign a new centre-back in the summer transfer window. Joel Matip picked up an ACL injury that will rule him out for the rest of the season. The Reds defender is also out of contract at the end of the season and Liverpool, in all probability, will not renew his contract.

Ibrahima Konate is here to stay while young Jarell Quansah has really impressed this season. With Joe Gomez still around, another quality centre-back will add a new dimension to this team.

With Virgil van Dijk not getting any younger, Liverpool must plan and bring in a quality new defender. Guehi has heavily impressed for Palace in the past couple of seasons, and he has played for the England national team as well.

Crystal Palace have badly struggled this season. They are likely to avoid the drop, but in the summer, the club could be forced to sell some of their prized assets including Guehi.
