Liverpool are readying a £40m bid to secure the signing of Atalanta’s midfielder, Teun Koopmeiners, according to Tutto Atalanta.
The Reds are yet to sign a new player in the January transfer window, and in all probability, they will not delve into the market in the remaining few days of the window.
Liverpool find themselves at the top of the Premier League, and they have enough depth in midfield. However, with Thiago Alcantara most likely to leave the club next summer, Jurgen Klopp could be interested in signing a new midfielder as his replacement.
The 25-year-old is recognized for his adaptability and proficiency in both defensive and offensive aspects of the game. He has emerged as a vital cog in the heart of Atalanta’s midfield, featuring in 19 Serie A matches as well as 26 matches across all competitions this season.
Boasting a season record of seven goals and four assists, the 25-year-old not only serves as a crucial component in Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad but also distinguishes himself as one of Serie A’s most well-rounded midfielders. His performances this season are reported to have attracted the interest of European top clubs, with Liverpool readying to launch an offensive to acquire the midfielder in an “intriguing” transfer move.
However, Liverpool are not the sole heavyweight in pursuit of Koopmeiners. Juventus and Napoli have also displayed keen interest, identifying him as an ideal addition to bolster their central midfield. Yet, with a valuation hovering between €45 and €50, Atalanta remains steadfast in assigning a fitting value to their prized asset.
Koopmeiners contract at the Gewiss Stadium is set to run until June 2027 with Tutto Atalanta reporting that Atalanta are insistent on his price tag ranging from €45-50m.
Vital cog
Jurgen Klopp’s side are already stacked in midfield having made adequate summer acquisitions in that area. The likes of Ryan Gravenberch, Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai, and Alexis MacAlister all joined Liverpool last summer in a bid to bolster their midfield ranks.
Surprisingly, MacAlister who is a viable attacking outlet has been deputized in the holding midfield role. Although the position is not his strength, the Argentine has shown immense quality in his interceptions and dictating of the game.
However, Liverpool would be less vulnerable to penetration and counterattacks if they possessed a highly skilled and technically gifted defensive midfielder in the mould of Koopmeiners who excels in stopping the opponent’s attack from both ends of the pitch.
It remains to be seen if Atalanta would entertain Liverpool’s £40m bid for their key player as they look to navigate their way into Champions League places.
