Manchester United are considering a move to sign Timo Werner in the January transfer window, according to a report from The Mirror.
John Cross says that the former Chelsea striker has emerged as a “serious” transfer target for Erik ten Hag in this winter window.
The Red Devils are looking to bolster their attacking department this month and Werner has emerged as one of the major targets.
The Mirror adds that United have been offered the chance to sign Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting who is another strong possibility as Erik ten Hag looks for more firepower.
RB Leipzig are pushing for a place in the Champions League place in the Bundesliga, and they are highly unlikely to allow Werner to go out on loan.
Need for a striker
Werner moved to Chelsea from RB Leipzig for £47m in 2020. After two years at the club, he was resigned by his old club for a bargain of £25m.
The 27-year-old won one Champions League title with the Blues but he was branded as a flop. In two years, he only managed ten goals in the Premier League. But, he could relish the chance to prove himself again in English football.
He has managed only two starts in the Bundesliga this season and has scored two goals. So, he could be looking to move away on loan where he would be getting regular game time.
Werner has struggled with niggling injuries and has struggled to hold down a regular place.
United badly need to bolster their forward department. The likes of Marcus Rashford (who was outstanding last season) and Anthony Martial have cut a disappointing figure while Rasmus Hojlund needs more time to adapt to the Premier League.
The Red Devils are hamstrung financially as they are close to their spending limit for January, which means they can only look for a loan deal for Werner if they want to sign him.
