Newcastle close to signing Manchester City midfielder Alfie Harrison

Four issues Eddie Howe must fix at Newcastle

Newcastle are “closing on an agreement” with Manchester City to sign midfielder Alfie Harrison, according to a report from the Daily Mail (printed edition, 24 January, page 66)

The Magpies are looking to add a new midfielder to their ranks in January, and they were heavily linked with a move to Kalvin Phillips. However, Phillips is now on his way to joining West Ham United.

Newcastle have moved quickly and are looking to secure a deal for the 18-year-old highly-rated midfielder. As per David Ornstein, the Magpies have even agreed an undisclosed fee to sign the midfielder.

The young midfielder has excelled for City at the academy level, and he will become the first arrival for the Magpies this month. Harrison is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days and is expected to sign a long-term contract.

Exciting talent

Harrison is an exciting young midfielder who has proved his quality at his age level, drawing comparisons with City’s prolific senior striker Erling Haaland for their visual resemblance.

He has got impressive goal and assist statistics, having scored eight goals in 11 appearances for the Under-18 side this season.

It will be interesting to see if he is seen as good enough to play in the Premier League or whether Newcastle consider him as a player for the future.

Newcastle are receiving interest for some of their first team-players at the moment. Kieran Tripper has been heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich this month. The player has already agreed verbal agreement but the Magpies have rejected two loan offers.

Likewise, Miguel Almiron is getting attention from Saudi Arabian side Al-Shabab, but they may need to pay a handsome fee to lure him away from St James’ Park. The Magpies are operating on a tight budget, and they may need to offload a few players to make room for new additions.
