West Ham have joined the race to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window.
The Hammers are missing some key players through injuries and David Moyes could look to bring in one or two players this month. They have done incredibly well this season, and with a little bit of help, the Hammers can surprise everyone in Europe as well.
The midfield is one area where West Ham really need to bolster. They haven’t filled the void left by Declan Rice and can afford to bring in an experienced player like Kalvin Phillips who has become surplus to requirements at Man City.
According to Sky Sports, several Premier League clubs like Everton and Crystal Palace are also in the race to sign the 28-year-old who is not a part of Pep Guardiola’s plans at the moment.
Should West Ham move for him?
Newcastle have been linked with a move for the former Leeds midfielder but they think that his signing doesn’t make much sense financially.
Tottenham Hotspur are also keen to sign Phillips, but it seems that the Hammers could be really keen to get him on board. Fabrizio Romano suggests that the Hammers remain a big fan of the player but it’s won’t be easy to pull off the deal.
City are ready to send him away on loan, but they want a loan fee – thought to be around £5m – and most, if not all, of his £135,000-per-week wages paid in full.
With Everton struggling with their finances where they can face another financial penalty, the Hammers can fancy their chances here. Phillips is a top-class defensive midfielder and should do well under Moyes.
At this moment, he needs to play regularly to stay in Gareth Southgate’s plans. He has hardly featured this season under Guardiola and his exit from the club is inevitable at some point. The Hammers should make a move for him provided City reduce their terms.
