West Ham could move for Ajax winger Steven Bergwijn

West Ham are targeting Ajax winger Steven Bergwijn as one of their options in the January transfer window, according to a report from The Telegraph

The Hammers are looking to cope with injuries to key players like Lucas Paqueta and Jarrod Bowen, both picked up issues in Sunday’s FA Cup draw with Bristol City.

With Michail Antonio also out injured, the Hammers are short of options in their attacking areas.

The Telegraph claims that David Moyes has earmarked Sunderland winger Jack Clarke and Ajax’s Bergwijn as potential options, however, the Hammers will only try to sign one of them, and they are weighing up bids for both players.

Bergwijn spent two years at Tottenham before he joined Ajax for a club-record fee of £26 million in the summer of 2022.

Should the Hammers move for him in January?

West Ham have been linked with a move for Jesse Lingard who is without a club at the moment, but The Athletic have claimed that the Hammers have no intention to sign him.

Bergwijn could be an interesting signing. He proved to be a major flop at Spurs but has shown his quality once again for Ajax. This season, the 32-times capped Dutch international, has managed eight goals and three assists for the Dutch giants in all competitions.

Given his quality, age, form, and experience, he could be a smart addition to the side. Bowen currently is the top scorer at the club with 14 goals while Paqueta undoubtedly has been one of their best players this season.

West Ham have qualified for the knock-out stages of the Europa League and they will require more quality. A move for Bergwijn makes a lot of sense.

Meanwhile, Wolves and Crystal Palace have shown interest in signing West Ham striker Danny Ings in January, but it looks unlikely that he would be sold this month.
