Leeds United are arguably enjoying their best spell under Daniel Farke as they picked up yet another win on Saturday (17 February) away from home.
Around 16,000 fans celebrated as Leeds picked up eight wins in eight in 2024. They have consolidated the second spot after beating Plymouth 2-0.
It was a professional performance from the Whites and they managed to pull it off quite comfortably in the end, although they had to withstand tough spells.
Goals from Willy Gnonto and Georginio Rutter sealed all three points, although Gnonto nearly made a big error, which Adam Pope described as “criminal” for BBC Sport.
Gnonto has been in terrific form of late and he made it five goals in five games this month with a low finish. He was nearly involved in another goal when Ashley Phillips scored an own goal but it was called offside.
“It is a lovely ball in, a dinky floaty ball over (Mikel) Miller’s head,” said Pope, as quoted by BBC Sport.
“It is criminal from Willy Gnonto to be offside there, he is arguing his case but he can see right across the line. He fires it in, and great finish from (Ashley) Phillips the big Plymouth centre-back!”
Relief for Leeds, job done
Phillips hads put the ball into his own net from Gnonto’s low cross but he was offside. Pope was clearly not impressed with his positioning, as it would have resulted in another goal for Leeds.
The home side faced a real storm in the form of a barrage of attacks at the start of the second half and Illan Meslier was called into action. He delivered arguably his best performance for the Whites.
All Leeds needed was a second goal to kill off the competition and Daniel Farke’s side managed their way through though when Rutter scored with a brilliant strike from inside the area.
It was the first defeat at home since October for Plymouth but there’s really no shame in losing against an impressive Leeds side.
