Bayern Munich are targeting a move for Liverpool target and Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso should they sack Thomas Tuchel, according to The Athletic.
Bayern lost their third consecutive game across all competitions at the weekend, and the Bundesliga giants could now be forced to part ways with the German to save their campaign.
Alonso has been impressive since taking charge of Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen, attracting Liverpool as a result, and Bayern are keen on appointing him temporarily with a view to the 42-year-old taking over permanently in the summer.
Bayern sacking Tuchel could be bad news for Liverpool, but their former midfielder is expected to be keen on remaining with Leverkusen until the end of the season.
His side remain undefeated in Germany’s top flight and are eight points clear ahead of the defending champions, but an opportunity to manage one of the biggest clubs on the planet could be too tempting for Alonso to turn down.
Missing out on him will be a massive blow for the Reds as the Spaniard is seen as the perfect replacement for the outgoing Jurgen Klopp.
Alonso will likely remain with Leverkusen until the end of the season, and he could be faced with a huge decision in the summer.
He may have to choose between remaining at his current club, moving to Liverpool or moving to Bayern, and it will be interesting to see how things go.
Alonso is not the only manager the Reds are monitoring, with Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou, Brentford manager Thomas Frank and his Brighton & Hove Albion counterpart Roberto De Zerbi also reportedly on their radar.
Getting the perfect successor for Klopp is a tricky task for the Anfield giants, and they cannot afford to get such a major decision wrong given how influential the German has been for nine years.
