Bayern to rival Liverpool for Xabi Alonso, with Tuchel’s job hanging by a thread

Bayern to rival Liverpool for Xabi Alonso next summer, with Tuchel’s job hanging by a thread

Bayern Munich are set to rival Liverpool in the race to appoint Xabi Alonso as manager next season, The Times reports.

Alonso is arguably the hottest property in the managerial market, and multiple clubs have been captivated by his immediate success at Bayer Leverkusen.

The 42-year-old has been hotly tipped to replace Jurgen Klopp, who has announced he will leave Liverpool at the end of the season, but Bayern’s emergence as a possible destination could scupper those plans.

Thomas Tuchel’s reign at the Allianz Arena is hanging by a thread following their recent 1-0 first-leg defeat to Lazio in the Champions League.

The German tactician, who won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, further incurred the wrath of the Bayern hierarchy after throwing his players under the bus in a post-match press conference.

In addition to starring down the barrel of another early Champions League exit, Bayern are also five points behind Alonso’s unbeaten Leverkusen in the race for the German top-flight title.

Over the past decade, Bayern have monopolised the Bundesliga crown, winning the league title in each of the last ten seasons in a row, but now face the prospect of getting knocked off the pinnacle of German football.

Tuchel’s contract with Bayern runs until the summer of 2025.

However, if his side fails to turn the Lazio tie around in the second leg, or fall further behind Leverkusen in the title race, the German champions could consider another mid-season managerial switch.

Alonso is understood to be at the top of Bayern’s wishlist to replace Tuchel next summer, but they’d have to battle Liverpool for the exciting Spanish tactician.

Klopp is determined to part ways with Liverpool on the best terms and continues to challenge for every title available this season. He could land a first when his side take on Chelsea in the EFL Cup final.

Liverpool are also leading the race for the Premier League title and are in the latter stages of the Europa League and the FA Cup.
