Brighton and Hove Albion head of recruitment Sam Jewell accepts offer to join Chelsea ahead of Manchester United in a senior position

Brighton and Hove Albion head of recruitment and Manchester United target Sam Jewell has accepted an offer to join Chelsea in a senior position, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.

The Blues and Red Devils were both keen on the 34-year-old, with Dan Ashworth looking to reunite with him at the Old Trafford club, but it is Chelsea who have won the battle for his services.

Jewell has tendered his resignation at Brighton and will now start in a global role across Chelsea’s owners’ multi-club model around November after serving a notice period.

He will join his predecessor Paul Winstanley at the Stamford Bridge club, and Man United will have to look elsewhere for the recruitment guru they want to add to Ashworth’s team once the former Newcastle United sporting director joins them.

While Chelsea are landing Jewell, they could be losing their chief recruitment analyst Kyle Macaulay to the Red Devils.

The 37-year-old joined the Blues alongside Graham Potter from Brighton but retained his position after the former manager lost his job.

Ashworth is also eyeing a reunion with the Chelsea employee at Man United and it remains to be seen if Newcastle will allow him to join the Red Devils.

Jewell turned down the chance to become the technical director at Scottish Premiership club Rangers last October to remain with Brighton but could not reject the chance to work with Chelsea.

The youngster has done a brilliant job since assuming the role with the Seagulls, with his keen eyes for talent making him a huge asset.

He successfully recruited the likes of Moises Caicedo and Carlos Baleba for Brighton having joined the club from Swindon as under-21s recruitment manager in May 2016 before he was promoted from emerging talent manager, initially on an interim basis, when Winstanley left in November 2022 to become co-sporting director at Chelsea.
