Celtic need to pay £6m to sign Paulo Bernardo permanently

Celtic have an opportunity to sign both Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah in the summer transfer window.

According to a report from the Daily Record (6 February, page 60), the Bhoys have been told that there is an option for them to land midfielder Bernardo for around £6m at the end of the season.

The 22-year-old midfielder joined the Hoops on loan from Benfica last summer. It has taken time for him to settle down at Parkhead, but he has become a “key player” under Brendan Rodgers, following the injury to Reo Hatate.

The Daily Record claims that Bernardo is happy in Glasgow and wants a permanent move. Likewise, there is also a possibility for Celtic to sign Adam Idah permanently at the end of the season.

Idah joined on loan in January from Norwich City. Both the players will have the final say about their futures, but the door is open now for the Bhoys to sign them if they want to.

Bernardo scored for Celtic in the Old Firm derby clash in December. Idah recently made his debut from the bench in the 1-1 draw against Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

The striker made a strong impact during the game, and Rodgers will assess him closely in the coming months before deciding whether he wants to sign him permanently.

Momentum

Rodgers didn’t hide his frustration when he said that the Hoops could have done better in the January transfer window. He felt there were opportunities to add depth and quality to the squad, but Celtic had a relatively quiet transfer window.

Celtic are still favourites to win the Scottish Premiership but it is far from guaranteed now. We have a fascinating title race on our hands after Rangers have narrowed the gap.

One could feel that Celtic are struggling at the moment while the Gers are brimming with confidence. There’s still plenty of football left to be played this season and it’s too early to assess the title race.
