Celtic winger Mikey Johnston to undergo West Brom medical

Celtic winger Mikey Johnston is ‘en route’ to West Bromwich Albion to have his medical, according to a report from Daily Record.

After Mikey Johnston’s return to Celtic in the summer following his stint away from Celtic Park; Brendan Rodgers, who returned as manager, opted not to send the winger out again after considering his circumstances.

The 24-year-old is eager for more playing time, but it appears unlikely to materialize at Celtic as competition for places has intensified.

Rodgers expressed dissatisfaction with Johnston’s performance during a Celtic victory over Hibernian in December, emphasizing the need for a higher level of consistency from the winger if he aspires to secure more regular first-team football in the green and white shirt.

Good move

Johnston appears to be under significant pressure at Celtic, with supporters’ patience seemingly wearing thin. A move away from the club might benefit all parties involved. Joining a West Brom side eager for promotion could be an ideal scenario for the highly talented Celtic Academy graduate, whose peak in the game lies ahead of him.

The resurgence of Liel Abada in the first-team fold following his return from injury, coupled with the acquisition of German winger Nicolas Kuhn from Rapid Vienna, has diminished the prospects of regular game time for the Irish winger.

Sitting in fifth place in the Championship, Johnston is set for a medical with The Hawthorns as an additional attacking option in their bid for promotion to the Premier League. Manager Carlos Corberán sees the winger as a valuable addition to bolster the team’s attacking prowess and enhance their chances of securing promotion.

Johnston’s contract at Celtic Park is set to expire in May 2026.

Meanwhile, David Turnbull is currently having his Cardiff City medical as he is edging closer to leaving the club on a permanent deal.
