Chelsea are plotting another massive exodus next summer, with the club wary of falling foul of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
According to the Telegraph, the club’s Premier League rivals are convinced the Blues will need to sanction some major business before June 30 if they’re to escape PSR sanctions.
Chelsea’s transfer business under the new regime is consistently a subject of heated debate, with Todd Boehly and co sanctioning a whooping £1 billion outlay on recruitment since assuming control of the club.
While that figure continues to make the headlines, especially as the current state of the club doesn’t reflect their spending, the Blues have also recovered approximately £400 million on player sales.
Chelsea raised over £130m before June 30 last summer following the departures of Kalidou Koulibaly, Edouard Mendy, Mateo Kovacic, Kai Havertz and academy graduate Ruben Loftus-Cheek.
The Telegraph reports that the Blues will require an identical spelling spree, with speculation amongst the club rivals suggesting they’ll need to raise around £100m before the end of June to remain on the right side of the PSR.
The club have reportedly played down rumours surrounding their PSR status, reiterating that early sales would be sanctioned with the purpose of reinforcing the squad.
Regardless, academy graduates like Ian Maatsen, Armando Broja, and Conor Gallagher would be sweating over their future at the club, with at least two expected to leave the club next summer.
Gallagher is not short on potential landing spots, with a number of Premier League teams already monitoring his situation. Tottenham Hotspur have been particularly attentive, with Chelsea still stalling over a new deal for the midfielder.
Borussia Dortmund loanee Maatsen has a £35m release clause in his contract, while Broja’s loan move to Fulham would make or break his future at Stamford Bridge.
AS Roma loanee Romelu Lukaku is another who could end his association with the West Londoners before June 30 following his successful loan spell in the Italian capital.
Lukaku has a £37m release clause in the new contract he signed before joining Roma on loan. While the Italians would struggle to activate the clause, Lukaku has plenty of suitors in the Saudi Pro League.
There is also uncertainty surrounding the futures of Trevoh Chalobah and Marc Cucurella, while Chelsea could pocket £28m from Lewis Hall’s permanent move to Newcastle United at the end of the season.
