West Ham suffered yet another defeat in the Premier League and Kalvin Phillips has come under criticism once again.
The Hammers are yet to win a game in 2024, and they have been badly struggling in the league. After a demoralizing 6-0 defeat at the hands of Arsenal, everyone thought they would come with a sharp response.
However, the Hammers suffered a 2-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground and David Moyes is under a lot of pressure at the moment.
Phillips joined in the January transfer window on loan and he has made a poor start at his new club. In his first game, he played out a back pass that led to a goal for Bournemouth. He was poor against Manchester United and Arsenal.
Against Forest, he picked up a red card as well, and clearly, things are not working according to his plans.
West Ham midfielder Kalvin Philipps ‘extremely frustrated’
Speaking on ESPN, Craig Burley has suggested that it has been a “disaster” for Phillips, the initial move to Manchester City and then West Ham. He says that the 28-year-old is “extremely frustrated” at the moment with himself.
“Clearly, it’s been a disaster for him. I think what we are seeing now is a very frustrated player,” said Burley.
“An extremely frustrated player who is not fit enough, not sharp enough, not enough game time. He is frustrated with his own performances.”
Phillips was one of the top midfielders in the country a few years back when he was playing for Leeds United. Marcelo Bielsa developed him into a top player and he became a major hit in Euro 2020 for England.
But his move to Manchester City has turned into a disaster. Phillips joined West Ham in the hope that he can revive his career once again under Moyes. However, it hasn’t worked out for him.
The 28-year-old doesn’t look sharp at the moment, as Burley rightly points out, and if this worrying form continues, he is unlikely to be picked by Gareth Southgate for the Euros.
