Fabrizio Romano: Takehiro Tomiyasu agrees new Arsenal deal

Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu has agreed a new deal at the Emirates, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano

The 25-year-old has become an important player under Mikel Arteta, mainly because of his versatility, and he is now offered a new deal at the club.

Romano says that the “big news” coming out of Arsenal is that the agreement is now in place and that the official announcement is imminent.

The likes of Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and William Saliba have agreed new deals at the club recently. He will become the next player for the Gunners to agree a contract extension.

Romano claims that only the paperwork is left to complete, but as it stands, Tomiyasu is all set to sign an improved deal at the club. There were interest from clubs in Italy to sign him last month but Arsenal never wanted to let him go.

Good news

“Following that result, I have more big news for Arsenal, and that’s that Takehiro Tomiyasu has now agreed to sign a new contract at the Emirates Stadium. The agreement is now in place, everything is ready, and an announcement is imminent,” wrote Romano.

“It’s just time to complete the paperwork, but Tomiyasu is going to be the next important player to sign a new deal at Arsenal, following on from others like Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and William Saliba in recent months.

“There was interest from clubs in Italy and elsewhere in the last months, but there was no chance for Tomiyasu to leave – Arsenal wanted to continue with him, and soon it’ll be time for this new deal to be made official. Here we go!”

Tomiyasu has made five starts in the Premier League this season and a further eight has come from the bench. He has also made four starts in the Champions League.

The Japan international is a versatile defender who can play on both flanks of defence as well in the centre-back role. He has proved to be a utility player, and it doesn’t come as a big surprise that Arsenal want to tie him down on a new contract.

Meanwhile, Arsenal have earned a 3-1 win against Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday (4 February) and have set themselves at the heart of an engaging three-horse title race.
