Tottenham suffered a disappointing 2-2 draw in their previous Premier League game against Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday (3 February).
Richarlison scored two goals for the north London club, and despite taking the lead twice in the game, Ange Postecoglou’s side failed to pick up maximum points away from home.
BBC pundit, Garth Crooks, was left impressed by Richarlison’s gesture during the game. The Brazilian didn’t celebrate after scoring against his old club, showing his respect to the Toffees fans.
While there can be debate about whether it is right for players to not celebrate after scoring against their former clubs, on this occasion Richarlison chose not to do so. Crooks was impressed that Richarlison, who was “outstanding” against Brentford, bowed in an apologetic gesture after scoring both goals.
“His goal, not to mention his performance in the 3-2 win against Brentford, was outstanding while his conduct having scored two goals in the 2-2 draw at Everton four days later was as respectful as I have seen from any footballer towards a former club,” said Crooks to BBC Sport.
“Not only did Richarlison recognise the significance of the goals, but the devastating effect it may have on Everton’s future. To put his hands together and bow in an apologetic gesture to the Gwladys Street End was about as respectful as it gets.”
Disappointing result
Postecoglou will be really disappointed with the result, but he should be very pleased with the performance of Richarlison.
At the start of the season, the Brazilian was really struggling to make an impact. He then underwent surgery and has looked fitter and sharper.
In the absence of Son Heung-Min, who is currently on international duty, Richarlison has taken the prominent role, scoring nine goals in his last eight games.
Spurs were in total control of the game and all they needed was the third goal to ensure all three points. They conceded right at the end and dropped precious two points instead.
