Jamie Carragher believes Bayern Munich putting Xabi Alonso top of their list as Thomas Tuchel replacement is bad news for Liverpool

Liverpool want Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso to replace Jurgen Klopp in the summer after the German leaves at the end of the season.

The Spaniard is reportedly in advanced talks with the Reds, but Bayern Munich have him on top of their list ahead of the summer after announcing yesterday that Thomas Tuchel will leave once the current campaign ends.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that is bad news for his old club when asked on CBS Sports last night what he thinks of the news, and there will be a fierce battle between both clubs for the services of the former midfielder in the coming months.

Kate Abdo and Carragher talked about the situation as shared on CBS Sports tiktok page, and here is how their conversation went.

Abdo: “The news or the rumour is that the person that they have top of their list is Xabi Alonso.”

“Who obviously we’ve talked about potentially going to your Liverpool. Is that bad news for Liverpool?”

Carragher: “Yes.”

Carragher knows Bayern will be very tempting for Alonso, and while he could end this season with a Bundesliga title, sustaining momentum with Leverkusen will be tough.

Bayern will be ready to splash the cash when Tuchel leaves, and they will be offering the former Liverpool star the opportunity to continue dominating in the German top-flight while also challenging for the Champions League.

The Reds missed out on the elite European competition last term and are currently challenging for the Europa League.

They are set to return to the Champions League next season as they are one of the favourites to win the Premier League this term, but major changes are expected with a new sporting director set to be appointed.

There is growing uncertainty over whether they can retain the core of their star-studded squad due to the imminent departure of Klopp, and the next manager may need to start building from scratch again.

However, Bayern do not have such challenges on their hands, which could give them an advantage and see them pip Liverpool to the services of Alonso.
