Everton loanee Mason Holgate was heavily criticized by Jermaine Beckford after he picked up a red card on Sunday (18 February).
Holgate struggled for regular game time under Sean Dyche and it became clear that he was not a part of his plans.
The Toffees boss won’t be happy to see what Holgate has done this week as his indiscipline had led to humiliation for Sheffield United against Brighton at Bramall Lane.
The 27-year-old defender joined the Blades on loan for the rest of the season. He picked up a red card after making a horror challenge on Kaoru Mitoma. Brighton won 5-0, but Holgate’s challenge has become a talking point.
He has apologized to Mitoma and his club teammates, while Chris Wilder has confirmed that he would be fined.
Jermaine Beckford, who works for various media outlets, has reacted to the footage from Sky Sports on X. He has described the challenge as “reckless” and “shocking”. Sky Sports pundit, Jamie Redknapp, also suggested that it was “scandalous”.
“I get tough tackles, but this is just reckless… I really wanted this move to be the one to help him find his stride, but this is shocking,” wrote Beckford.
Mason Holgate has no future at Everton
Holgate joined the Toffees from Barnsley in 2015 and has made over 145 appearances for the club in all competitions across eight seasons.
In the past few years, he has gradually dropped down the pecking order at the club, and spent time on loan at Southampton where he failed to make an impact.
Even if Everton get relegated, it’s hard to see Holgate becoming a key player for them again. He has a contract at Goodison Park until 2025, but chances are high that he will be sold in the summer.
Dyche will be disappointed with the media outrage at Holgate’s tackle, as clearly, it was malicious. This was probably Holgate’s last chance to make a strong impact and prove a point to his manager, but his loan spell is already proving to be a big disaster.
