Jurgen Klopp blown away by Liverpool talent Jayden Danns

Liverpool secured their first trophy of the season after beating Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley on Sunday (25 February).

The Reds’ squad has been depleted with injuries to several key players and Jurgen Klopp was forced to introduce a host of young academy players into the mix.

The likes of Jarell Quansah (21), Harvey Elliott (20), Conor Bradley (20), Bobby Clark (19), James McConnell (19), and Jayden Danns (18) were some of the youngsters who played their part as Liverpool earned a 1-0 victory.

With two minutes of extra time remaining, skipper Virgil van Dik led by example, as he nodded home the winner. He had a goal disallowed early in the game and many felt that the goal should have stood.

Jurgen Klopp later described it as arguably “the most special trophy” he has won in his career. The Reds boss showered praise on Danns who only made his debut against Luton Town in the previous Premier League game.

Danns was brilliant against Chelsea and was involved in one or two very good chances. Klopp hailed him as a “really special” player who was “absolutely insane” against the Blues.

“The development of James McConnell is absolutely insane, and Jayden Danns has only recently joined us in first-team training,” said Klopp in his post-match press conference.

“I loved him from the first second; really special. And he comes on today, OK he played in the last game, but he can score two goals in a Carabao Cup final. It’s absolutely insane.”

Liverpool were terrific v Chelsea

While Vna Dijk deserves all the accolades for showing great leadership on the pitch, there were some unbelievable performances from other players as well.

Luis Diaz was immense on the night, and the same can be said about Caoimhin Kelleher, who was hailed by Van Dijk as world-class after the game. Likewise, young Elliott was magnificent, and Wataru Endo ran the show for the entire 120 minutes, without showing any signs of tiredness.

But the best part was definitely how the young players came in and played without fear. The likes of Clark and McConnell simply dominated the midfield, giving the impression that they have been with the senior side for ages.

With so many players out injured, and after an intense game like this, Klopp may struggle to pick his best line-up for the FA Cup clash against Southampton in midweek.
