Leeds United not inclined to offer Ian Poveda new deal

Leeds United will have to make some key decisions in the summer irrespective of where they end up at the end of the season.

If they return to the Premier League, the Whites may need to change their transfer strategy. However, if they fail to do so, they will have to make sure that the squad stays competitive and have enough quality to challenge for promotion again.

The club already offloaded a host of players during the last summer, and they are expected to make decisions on those whose contract is up in the air.

Luke Ayling is one of those players who will be leaving the club on a free transfer but senior players like Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas could also leave. According to a report from the Athletic, the club have decided already on the future of Ian Poveda.

No new Leeds deal for Poveda

The 23-year-old joined Sheffield United on loan for the rest of the season. Big things were expected from him when he was signed by Marcelo Bielsa from Manchester City.

He has shown flashes of brilliance at times but never fully managed to cement his place in the side, under any manager. Phil Hay writes that people who have coached Poveda describe him as “extremely talented”, but he hasn’t been able to display that for Leeds.

Leeds are inclined not to extend his deal which runs out until the end of the season. He has managed only two league starts in four years at Elland Road, which shows that he has surplus to requirements at the club.

He moved to Sheffield on the deadline day in January, and it looks like he may have played his last game at the club. Poveda was not getting regular games at the club, and a move away from the club makes a lot of sense.

The news came out of the blue. Probably the club was hesitant about whether to keep him and offer him a new deal, but now it seems his time at Leeds is truly over. He probably needs to play really well to get a permanent contract from Sheffield United, or elsewhere next summer.
