Liverpool are among clubs that are showing interest in singing Wolves defender Pedro Neto, according to David Ornstein.
Replying to questions from football fans on The Athletic, Ornstein says that it won’t be easy for the Reds to prise the winger away from Wolves, simply because there is no guarantee that he would leave the club.
Liverpool, in any case, need to pay around £80m to secure his signature. The likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Newcastle are also in the picture to sign the 23-year-old Portuguese who has been enjoying a “brilliant” campaign for Wolves this season.
All the aforementioned clubs have concerns over Neto’s fitness. He has a contract at Molineux until 2027 and Wolves are expected to demand a high transfer fee for him. They are likely to finish within the top half of the table, and this will put them in a strong position financially.
“It is no secret that the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Newcastle United (perhaps Manchester United, too, with Dan Ashworth moving there from Newcastle) are all admirers of the Portugal international, although they may harbour some reservations about his fitness record. It would also take around £80m for Wolves to part with Neto, as I understand it, and that is another obstacle,” wrote Ornstein.
Liverpool set for major summer rebuilding
The Reds will lurch in a fresh direction in the summer as a new era will begin under a new manager. Jurgen Klopp will leave the club at the end of the season, and whoever becomes the next manager, will have a huge task in hand to carry on the legacy.
Liverpool are in the mix to win four trophies this season. They can win one this Sunday when they face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.
While Klopp will not only leave behind a top-quality squad for the next manager, whoever takes charge will have a stable foundation to take the club forward. Financially, Liverpool are very strong but they are not someone who spend recklessly in the transfer market.
Neto is a fantastic player, no doubt, but there is no guarantee that the Reds will at all be interested in a few months’ time, even if they decide to let Mohamed Salah go.
