Liverpool have a major rebuilding task at hand next summer, irrespective of how they end the 2023-24 campaign.
The Reds not only need to appoint a new manager following Jurgen Klopp’s decision to leave the club at the end of the season, but also they need to bring in a new sporting director.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are actively looking to bring in a sporting director who will guide the club’s football masterplan for years to come. Since 2022, Liverpool had three sporting directors, and they are currently without one since Jorg Schmadtke left the club in January.
According to a report from The Athletic, Frederic Massara is “under consideration” for this role. The 55-year-old Italian was the former Sporting director of AC Milan. He is currently on gardening leave and would be willing to take the job immediately.
The report claims that he is not the only one Liverpool are looking at. The Reds are also checking on Florent Ghisolfi, who holds the same role at Nice.
Liverpool need to sort it out ASAP
The situation is complicated although Liverpool knew from October that Klopp would leave the club at the end of the season. They cannot take a drastic step until the end of the season, as Klopp deserves the time and respect to say goodbye graciously.
Moreover, Liverpool are in the mix of a great season, where they can win all four trophies. So, any major appointment will have to wait until the end of the season. But, if they are looking to appoint Xabi Alonso, they will have to move quickly and build a proper system in place for the new manager.
The role of a sporting director is massive at a big football club. Not only does he chart the plans for short and long-term strategies, but he is also key behind signings, although the manager largely has the final say on recruitment.
In the case of Liverpool, the new sporting director will have to sort out contract decisions on three key players – Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, apart from signing new players next summer.
