Martin Keown not impressed by Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario

Tottenham managed a 2-2 draw against Everton in the Premier League on Saturday (03 February) at Goodison Park.

Brazilian forward Richarlison scored two goals for the north London club against his former club, but Guglielmo Vicario proved to be the weak link in the end, as Everton equalised in the 94th minute which takes them over the drop zone.

Tottenham were not at their imperious best but they were cruising for all three points. They controlled the game really well but Everton kept on fighting until the end and got the equaliser.

Martin Keown was critical of Vicario, and he said on BBC Final score (relayed by BBC Sport) that the goalkeeper should have done better. He thinks that the 27-year-old goalkeeper, who is on £75k-per-week deal, is “costing them points”.

“For Tottenham, [their goalkeeper] Guglielmo Vicario is costing them goals from set-pieces. He should have done better [for both Everton goals],” said Keown.

Disappointing

It was a disappointing result for Tottenham in the end. Ange Postecoglou will feel that they should have defended better. To concede a goal in the 94th minute will hurt the side that are challenging for the Champions League spot.

Vicario has been a reliable goalkeeper for Spurs but other clubs have spotted a weakness in him. When he is being targeted physically, he tends to lose his control, and that’s what happened against Everton today.

In the first half, the Toffees scored from a corner where Vicario couldn’t clear the danger properly. For the final goal, he was not brave enough to come out of his line and punch the ball away.

Jarrad Branthwaite was smart enough to guide the ball home and earn a crucial point for the Toffees.

Spurs needed the third goal to finish the game off, and they created some very good opportunities. But they will be disappointed to concede so late.
