Liverpool secured their first win at Brentford in the Premier League era as they cemented their position at the top of the table.
With Manchester City and Arsenal breathing down their neck which promises to be a three-horse title race, Liverpool rose to the challenge in the lunch-time kick-off with a sumptuous 4-1 win over Brentford away from home.
Darwin Nunez scored in the first half for the Reds, while Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah, and Cody Gakpo added the rest of the goals in the second half. Ivan Toney pulled one back for the home side but it was a mere consolation in the end.
Matt Holland, the popular pundit, who was co-commenting on the game, showered praise on Mac Allister, saying his finish was “top class”. He added it was a “brilliant” goal from the Reds involving an exquisite pass from Salah.
“Salah’s ball is terrific. The first touch from Mac Allister even better. The finish was top-class. Another brilliant Liverpool goal,” said Holland live-on-air while commentating on the game for Premier League world feed (55 mins).
Mac Allister’s best position for Liverpool
The Argentine midfielder admitted after the game that he loves playing in an advanced position where he frequently gets into the box. This was a classical example as Salah found him into the box as he made a smart run.
The finish was fantastic and it shows what a quality player he is. For Liverpool, he usually plays in a deeper role and Jurgen Klopp feels that Mac Allister is more than capable of doing that job perfectly.
It was a professional performance from the Reds who were clinical and took the best advantage of Brentford’s lapses in defence. Klopp will be thrilled by the return of Salah who also got his name to the scoresheet.
However, Liverpool will be very disappointed following the injuries to Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota, both were taken off in the first half.
