Matthew Upson raves about Ilia Gruev after Leeds United win v Plymouth

Leeds United finally moved into the next round of the FA Cup after beating Plymouth Argyle 4-1 on Tuesday night.

The Whites managed a 1-1 draw against Plymouth at Elland Road which meant they were forced to play a replay. Daniel Farke’s side had to go down south to face Ian Foster’s side, and it eventually came down to be a happy journey.

Just when it seemed like Plymouth had run out of energy, Leeds scored three goals in extra time to move to the fifth round of the FA Cup.

There have been some fantastic individual performances from Leeds players, but one player who really stood out was Ilia Gruev. Speaking on BBC One, the 23-year-old midfielder has earned praise from BBC pundit, Mathew Upson.

He says that the Belgian was at the “heart of everything” as the Whites secured a comfortable win in the end. They will play Chelsea or Aston Villa in the next round.

“Gruev has been at the heart of everything Leeds have done in and out of possession,” said Upson on BBC One, as relayed by BBC Sport.

Match summary

The 23-year-old has made six starts in the Championship this season, and a further nine appearances have come from the bench.

It was from Gruev’s corner, that Leeds got their fourth goal as it took a slight touch off Ryan Hardie and got into the net.

On a rain-soaked wet night, it took until 66 minutes for the Whites to break the deadlock. It came through Willy Gnonto who appeared to have picked up an injury as well.

The home side didn’t give up and restored parity within the next 15 minutes, with the goal coming from Brendon Galloway.

Farke introduced fresh legs in the form of Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, and both ensured the trip to the south didn’t go in vain as they hit the target.
