Newcastle United are already looking to replace Eddie Howe and they have interested in bringing in Julian Nagelsmann in the summer.
It has been a tough season for the Magpies and they are likely to miss out on a European spot this season. Last season, they may have overachieved but the club probably won’t accept a mid-table finish under any circumstance.
Newcastle can still end the season on a high by winning the FA Cup. They defeated Blackburn Rovers on penalties on Tuesday night at Ewood Park, but there is a feeling that the Magpies are not performing to the level they should have been.
Of course, Howe can point out that the squad has been ravaged by injuries almost throughout the season, and when that happens it becomes difficult for any manager to perform with any sort of consistency.
What has been really frustrating is that he lost key players at different intervals for a lengthy period, and have lacked genuine quality at times.
Nevertheless, Christian Falk reports that the Magpies are keen to appoint Nagelsmann as their next manager at St James’ Park.
“Exclusive: Newcastle is interested in Julian Nagelsmann (36) for summer. The German National coach has not decided yet if he want to Return to a Club or sign a new contract. Nagelsmann is in the same agency like Newcastle‘s Fabian Schär,” he wrote on X.
Nagelsmann would be a good appointment but harsh on Howe
Nagelsmann would be a smart appointment for the Magpies, no doubt. He proved his managerial acumen after doing a great job with both RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich.
He then took the role of the head coach of the German national team, and it’s unclear whether he would be willing to step down and manage a Premier League club.
However, sacking Howe would be a harsh decision. The former Bournemouth manager has done a brilliant job so far but one has to take into consideration the number of injuries Newcastle have had this season.
The expectations are high because of the huge investment they have made, but Howe deserves a fair chance next season to take the club back to the top four once again.
