Everton lacked spark in their creative department and could salvage a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Monday night.
The Toffees are without a win in the Premier League this year and haven’t picked up three points in the past eight games in the league.
Against Crystal Palace, a team that are badly struggling and visited without their manager, Everton were expected to raise their levels in front of their home fans.
Palace took the lead in the second half through Jordan Ayew. Everton pulled one back in the 84th minute through Amadou Onana.
One player who has cut a sorrowful figure yet again was Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The 26-year-old has scored three goals in the Premier League this season, but he hasn’t found the net since October.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Jason Cundy highlighted the point that Calvert-Lewin hasn’t been contributing enough.
“Dominic Calvert-Lewin. I can’t believe he hasn’t scored since October. He doesn’t look like he is ever going to score again,” said Cundy.
Everton need to play really well
Calvert-Lewin, who is on £100k-per-week deal at Goodison Park, has badly struggled this season. In the previous campaigns, he struggled horribly through injuries. This season, while he has largely managed to stay injury-free, his performances have been dire.
While Everton are anxiously waiting to know the outcome of their appeal against point deduction, they have to focus on the games at hand. Alan Myers has rightly said that while the appeal decision needs to come quickly as it is affecting the club, at the same time, it can’t be seen as an excuse for poor performances.
Sean Dyche has done a brilliant job at the club with his limited resources, but probably they can look to play a more expansive football rather than play safe most of the time. They have mostly scored through set pieces, and need to look for other means to create more chances.
Calvert-Lewin looks like he is short of confidence at the moment. He is a very good striker but his performances are nowhere near the level we know what he is capable of.
