Thiago Alcantara may have played his last game for Liverpool

Liverpool have won the Carabao Cup this season but they are still fighting for three more trophies.

One major factor that is hurting the Reds at the moment is their growing injury issues. The squad has been reduced to bare bones at the moment, and Klopp is left with no other options but to use academy players to fill up the numbers.

While he expects to get most of his players back after the international break, some players may not feature again this season.

Joel Matip is one of those who is unlikely to feature again this season after tearing his ACL. Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he is not sure whether Thiago Alcantara can play again this season as well.

This is a massive blow for the Spanish midfielder who had to wait until February to make his first appearance. He was on the sidelines with a hip injury before the game against Arsenal.

He came on as a substitute and picked up a muscle injury again. Klopp previously refused to put a timeline for his return and now he has hinted that the former Barcelona midfielder may not play for the Reds this season.

“I don’t know, to be honest (if he will play again this season),” Klopp said, as quoted by Evening Standard.

“It’s a couple of things but what he has to do now from a medical point of view and I don’t know if it will mean again if he can play again. It’s not a short-term thing and that’s why I’m not 100% in it. I’m not sure if it’s the same but the region is the same.”

Thiago joined Liverpool in the summer of 2020 from Bayern Munich on a free transfer and there were a lot of excitement surrounding his move. The 32-year-old, who is on £200k-per-week deal at Anfield, is in his final year at the club.

He has made 98 appearances in all competitions for the Reds. While he has shown flashes of brilliance at times, Liverpool didn’t get to see his best form in all those years.

It looks like Liverpool are not going to give him a new deal. He was linked with a move away in the January transfer window, but Klopp prevented him from leaving.

If he doesn’t play again this season, it would mean that Thiago may have already played his last game for the club.
