West Ham came from behind to secure all three points against Everton last Saturday in the Premier League at Goodison Park.
After going eight matches without a win in all competitions, the Hammers have now managed two wins in a row in the Premier League. As a result, they find themselves seventh in the table, with only two points behind Manchester United.
Kurt Zouma restored parity after Beto gave Everton the lead. Then two late goals from Tomas Soucek and Edson Alvarez earned all three points for the Hammers.
Alan Shearer has been left impressed with the performance of Alvarez and he has picked the 26-year-old midfielder in his Premier League Team of the Week.
“A really impressive performance, capped off by a deserved late goal. He could prove to be a bargain,” said Shearer.
Edson Alvarez – hit signing for West Ham
David Moyes was left with a big ask to fill the void after Declan Rice left the club to join Arsenal in the summer transfer window.
The Hammers needed to sign a defensive midfielder and Moyes signed Alvarez from Ajax, by paying a handsome fee of £35.4m.
The Mexican international has settled in nicely after initial teething problems, and now he is one of the key players under Moyes. This was his first Premier League goal and he took it really well.
The manner in which he kept his composure and dinked it over the goalkeeper from close range shows his quality.
In 23 appearances for the Hammers this season in the Premier League, Alvarez manages 2.7 tackles and 1.3 interceptions. He also maintains over 86% passing accuracy and Shearer is spot on that the defensive midfielder could prove to be a bargain signing.
Having said that, West Ham further need to bolster their midfield in the summer transfer window. They now will face Freiburg in the Europa League on Thursday followed by Premier League clash against Burnley at home.
