Chris Sutton seriously impressed by Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

The next few months will be important for some of the Liverpool players who are looking to get into the squad for Euro 2024.

The Reds have already won the Carabao Cup, and despite the disappointment of the FA Cup exit, they can still win the Premier League and the Europa League in what will be Jurgen Klopp’s final season at the club.

During the recent international games, Liverpool defender Joe Gomez impressed for England. Chris Sutton has suggested that he would pick the 26-year-old in the starting line-up for the Three Lions in Euro 2024.

Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold missed England’s last two games with injuries but he will hope to find a seat for the flight to Germany. Curtis Jones was in terrific form for the Reds before he got injured and he could come in contention for the final selection.

What Sutton has said about Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Sutton said to BBC Sport: “Gareth Southgate will pick Harry Maguire if he’s fit but I have been really impressed by Joe Gomez this season, wherever he has played in Liverpool’s defence, and I want to pick him.”

Gomez has made 14 starts in the Premier League, and a further ten appearances have come from the bench. He has also made eight appearances in the Europa League, and in total has made 41 appearances for the Reds in all competitions this season.

To be fair, Gomez is not Jurgen Klopp’s first choice when everyone is fit. Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate are his two first-choice centre-backs, but Gomez would have got games anyway after Joel Matip picked up an ACL injury.

He is a versatile defender and can play across all positions at the back. When Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson got injured, Gomez played wherever Klopp wanted him to, and he hasn’t put a foot wrong.

Gomez has been very consistent with his performances for Liverpool in the past few months and he deserves to be in the England national squad for the Euros. His versatility should be properly utilised in the big tournament.

In other Liverpool news, the Reds scouts are seriously impressed by 21-year-old midfielder.
