Leeds United have jumped to the top of the Championship for the first time this season after they defeated Millwall 2-0 on Sunday at Elland Road.
Leicester City were leading by 17 points from Leeds at one point, and the gap has now been closed, although the Foxes can regain the lead from their game in hand.
As it stands, Leeds and Leicester City are both tied on 82 points, while Ipswich Town are third with 81 points. Southampton have gone off the boil with 73 points in fourth, although they’ve played two games less.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Don Goodman has said that the momentum is with Leeds in the race for promotion, and they have peaked at the perfect time which is a “massive” confidence builder.
The Whites remain the only side in the league who have remained unbeaten at home, and they have been “incredible” in 2024, having won 12 games out of 13, drawing the other one.
Don Goodman delivers verdict on Leeds United momentum
He said: “It’s huge. Won 12, drew one in their last 13, in any level of football, that is an incredible winning run.
“That is massive momentum, confidence builder, self-belief builder all the things that if you’re Leicester, Ipswich and Southampton, you would not want to happen.
“The momentum is with them. They have peaked up at the perfect time.”
Leeds have hit a new gear since the turn of the year. One of the major factors behind their incredible run is the defensive solidity. The partnership of Joe Rodon and Ethan Ampadu has given them massive stability at the back, and it is on this defensive foundation, that they have been able to build a winning run.
Patrick Bamford has found his Midas touch once again, while the likes of Georginio Rutter, Willy Gnonto, Crysencio Summerville and Dan James have all contributed heavily in the attacking department. It has been a complete collective effort.
There are still loads of games left to be played, and Leeds will have to deal with some tricky fixtures. Given how tight the competition is at the top, they may have to keep winning to secure an automatic promotion to the Premier League.
