Gary Lineker has shared how he is feeling right now after Leeds United moved to the top of the Championship table after beating Millwall 2-0 on Sunday (17 March) at Elland Road.
Wilfried Gnonto scored a cracking goal while Dan James added another as Leeds picked up all three points to put pressure on both Leicester and Ipswich Town.
The popular BBC Sport pundit is a lifelong Leicester City fan and enjoyed a long career for the Foxes during his playing days. He wants to see his old club return to the Premier League but the current league situation has made him “terrified”.
Leeds were 17 points behind the Foxes at one point, but they have closed the gap admirably, after hitting new gear in 2024, where they have managed 12 wins and a draw in their last 13 Championship games.
Leicester, who lost to Chelsea in the FA Cup on Sunday, still have a game in hand, but they are now under tremendous pressure.

Lineker said on The Rest is Football podcast: “It’s the hope that kills you. The Hope. Aspirations. You just think something has to happen at some point. Actually, Leicester have lost top spot now in the league because Leeds beat Millwall.

Lineker added: “Edgy. I said I would take an FA Cup win and not promotion. A trophy over getting back in the Premier League, because next season we would win a load more games. Now I’m terrified we will get neither.”
The league is still very tight at the top but Leeds are in a great position to secure an automatic promotion unless they collapse dramatically.
Leeds and Leicester are both on 82 points, while Ipswich, third in the table, are on 81. The Whites have remained undefeated at home and they managed to produce yet another dominant display at Elland Road on Sunday.
The Whites need to maintain the same momentum after the international break as any slip-up could prove costly. They may have to maintain this winning run until the end of the season, which shows how competitive the league has been.
