Ian Wright impressed by Everton midfielder Dwight McNeil

Everton suffered a 2-0 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon in the Premier League.

Sean Dyche’s side created loads of chances and were the better side of the two but they were profligate in front of goal.

Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford scored from the spot to earn all three points for the Red Devils. Dyche has been left frustrated by his side’s inability to take chances, but certainly, they played with a positive intent.

On BBC Match of the Day, Ian Wright praised Dwight McNeil as he was watching footage of Everton’s chances against the Red Devils.

The popular football pundit said McNeil was “very, very good” for the Toffees. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder came close to scoring on two occasions, and was one of the best players on the pitch for the Toffees.

“I thought McNeil was very very good for Everton today. This is a great shot. Can he hit the target? Maybe make the goalie make a save, because you see is kind of lost where he is,” said Wright on Match of the Day.

Same old problems for Everton

Gary Lineker has rightly pointed out that it has been a recurrent theme for the Toffees. They are yet to win a Premier League game in 2024, and the club is affected by the uncertainty over takeover problems.

McNeil has been brilliant for the Toffees this season. He has managed two goals and five assists in the Premier League in 23 starts.

Against United, they were very organized and kept on creating chances, but they just couldn’t find the finishing touch. They pressed high up the pitch and didn’t allow the Red Devils to play free-flowing football, but at the same time, they needed to keep cool heads inside the box as well.

The two goals conceded came from penalties, and both James Tarkowski and Ben Godfrey – two senior players at the club – made clumsy tackles inside the box, which is unacceptable at this level.
