Leeds United have dropped to second in the Championship after they drew 2-2 against Watford on Friday night at Vicarage Road.
The Whites are one of the favourites to secure automatic promotion this season, but the battle at the top is intense, with Ipswich Town and Leicester City are in the mix.
Leicester City were leading by 17 points at one stage, but Leeds have now managed to get above them, although the Foxes have a game in hand.
Daniel Farke has taken the club to a new height since the turn of the year, and if they are promoted, the Whites are expected to support him with funds to bolster the squad.
The Whites boss could look for players with proven Premier League experience, and that’s why Leeds are already making an ambitious plan to bring back their former player in a blockbuster deal.
Leeds will certainly offload most of the players, if not all, who are on loan at the moment, which will free up the space and wages to make some top additions.
Leeds United eye summer move for Kalvin Phillips
According to a report from the Sunday Mirror (page 65), Leeds will make an attempt to sign Kalvin Phillips and are preparing a £30m offer for the 28-year-old midfielder.
Leeds sold Phillips to Manchester City for around £42m in 2022. The England midfielder failed to make an impact under Pep Guardiola and he was sent on loan to West Ham in January.
Any chance of City signing Lucas Paqueta involving Phillips in a swap deal is out of the window as the midfielder is going through a nightmare loan spell.
Phillips is a hero at Leeds, and the Whites could provide him with another lifeline to return to his old best. However, the move is only possible if Leeds secure promotion to the Premier League.
The England midfielder was seen as one of the best holding midfielders in the country a few years back, but his confidence has been completely shattered at the moment.
