Liverpool owners have held face-to-face talks with their former sporting director Michael Edwards as they look to convince him to return to the Anfield club this summer, according to the Times.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG) want the 44-year-old to help oversee the post-Jurgen Klopp era, and owner John W Henry, president Mike Gordon and other senior executives met with him in Boston last weekend, and the meeting is seen as a ‘significant development’ considering that Edwards had earlier turned down the chance to return.
Having also made it clear in January that he is not interested in becoming their new sporting director, it is believed that the Liverpool owners want him for a bigger and wider role.
If appointed, Edwards is expected to help the Reds choose successors for Klopp and Jorg Schmadtke, who left as their sporting director at the end of the January transfer window, and Bournemouth technical director Richard Hughes is one of the favourites for the position as he prepares to leave the Cherries in the summer following an announcement.
Edwards could become Liverpool’s head of football operations and lead their recruitment and analytics departments, and the owners are hoping they can get him back to Merseyside sooner rather than later.
He spent a decade with the Reds between 2012 and 2022, becoming sporting director in 2016 and helping to turn around the fortunes of the club with some brilliant recruitment.
Edwards played a massive role in helping Liverpool win the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League title in 2019-20 with the squad overhauling he oversaw in the preceding years, and FSG believe they could do with his services again as they prepare for life without their German manager.
However, it remains to be seen if they can successfully convince him to come back to the club, and they need to sort things out as soon as possible with the summer transfer window fast approaching.
