Newcastle United have suffered a devastating blow earlier this week.
The Magpies have suffered terrible luck with injuries this season, and now they have lost Sven Botman for the rest of the season. He will miss a major chunk of action next season as well.
According to a report from The Guardian, Botman will undergo a knee surgery and he is facing up to nine months on the sidelines. The 24-year-old limped out of the FA Cup loss against Manchester City and he is now facing a lengthy lay-off on the sidelines.
The Magpies, who will have to be smart in their transfer dealings next summer due to PSR issues, need more than one centre-back before the start of next season.
According to journalist Joel Bland, who is well-connected to Newcastle and has worked for The Times, has claimed that the Magpies will consider a move for Alessandro Buongiorno.
The Magpies have been targeting Giorgi Scalvini for a long time, but Buongiorno is seen as a cheaper alternative.
He writes: “Exclusive: Newcastle will consider a move for Alessandro Buongiorno, who has emerged as a potentially cheaper alternative to Giorgi Scalvini (liked also by Manchester United) who has been tracked long-term by the club. A centre-back was a priority position in the summer, but Lewis Hall deal maxed the budget.”

The Torino defender has made 21 starts in the Serie A and has scored three goals so far. He makes around 2.4 tackles and 2.4 interceptions per game, as per whoscored, and his performances this season have caught the attention of other top clubs.
Chelsea are thought to be interested in him with The Sun reporting that Torino are holding out for a fee of £35m after previously rejecting a £21.5m bid from another Serie A side.
The defender recently expressed his desire to test himself in the Champions League, something Newcastle won’t be able to offer him next season. Newcastle are also checking on other options with Antonio Silva, Edmond Tapsoba, Ousmane Diomande and Tosin Adarabioyo also featuring on their wish list.
