Owen Hargreaves destroys Everton defender James Tarkowski

Everton remain winless in the Premier League since mid-December after they lost 2-0 against Manchester United on Saturday at Old Trafford.

The Toffees created better chances and the scoreline could have been different had they been more clinical. Instead, they ended up with two silly fouls inside the box in the first half allowing the home side to score from two penalties.

James Tarkowski made a poor challenge on Alejandro Garnacho and gifted away a penalty just when the Toffees were looking to take control of the game.

Ben Godfrey also made a clumsy challenge on Garnacho, and the referee again pointed to the spot.

Owen Hargreaves, who works for TNT Sports, slammed Tarkowski for his challenge on Premier League World Feed (9 March, half-time analysis), saying it was a “ridiculous” challenge for the Toffees centre-back, adding that Dyche would be fuming.

“Ridiculous challenge from James Tarkowski. I told my son’s team to stay on your feet and not go down. These guys are making terrible challenges. Sean Dyche would be fuming,” said Hargreaves.

Everton are in a mess at the moment

It has been a familiar story for Everton once again. They have stayed organised and created chances, but they simply cannot convert those chances.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin hasn’t scored for five months and he is running low on confidence at the moment. The same can be said about other players. The decision-making could have been a lot better in most cases, and at times they just failed to take 50-50 gambles.

Alan Myers pointed out that the uncertainty around the club over the ownership and the second possible point deduction are affecting the club. While this is a genuine concern, one cannot hide from the fact that Everton players are not doing the basics right.

The players and the manager are putting in a lot of effort, but the results are not coming for them. They need to win games, otherwise, they could be dragged into the relegation battle once again.
