Paul Merson reacts as Jean-Philippe Mateta scores in Crystal Palace draw v Luton Town

Crystal Palace suffered a late heart-break after they managed a 1-1 draw in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon at Selhurst Park.

It looked like the Eagles would pick up all three points but Luton Town scored in the dying seconds of the match to spoil the party.

Crystal Palace created loads of opportunities and the scoreline could have easily been different. They defended really well throughout the game but that late goal would hurt the team and Oliver Glasner who was so close to picking up his second win.

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored a spectacular goal in the first half, and could have added one or two more had he been more clinical. Eberechi Eze was simply outstanding for the Eagles while Odsonne Edouard struck the post after coming from the bench.

Paul Merson was left awestruck by the goal from Mateta. He said it was a “phenomenal” goal from the 26-year-old on Soccer Saturday.

“Mateta comes in. What a finish! He lets it roll, does a Kanu and flicks it behind the far corner. It’s a phenomenal finish. It was so much to do as well. This lad has so much improved,” said Merson.

Heartbreak for Crystal Palace

Glasner will be really disappointed with the result. Palace did so well throughout the game and created better opportunities.

However, in the Premier League, if you fail to take up your chances, then the opposition can punish you, and exactly that has happened at Selhurst Park.

Palace should have scored more than two or three goals, but credit to Luton Town they managed to get one point from this tough fixture.

Mateta scored a brilliant goal, though. He had no one in the box to pick out a pass, and all he could was come up with a cheeky flick that ended up in the net.

The striker should have buried the game as he missed two gilt-edged chances later.
