Phil Hay reacts as Leeds United teenager Archie Gray makes England history

Leeds United youngster Archie Gray became the fourth-youngest-ever player to score for England U21s when he netted in England U21s’ 5-1 win over Azerbaijan.

The 18-year-old highly-rated young Leeds talent showed his quality as the England U21 side registered a convincing win on Friday.

Gray, who has already made a big impact for the Whites this season, marked a memorable debut after he was introduced late on in the game.

The versatile youngster, who has played as a right-back, defensive midfielder and attacking midfielder this season, has made 36 appearances in the Championship, of which he started in 33 of them.

Daniel Farke deserves a lot of credit for showing great faith in Gray and this goal for his country will give him loads of confidence. It’s a moment of great pride for him.

Phil Hay described his performance on X in just one word – “effortless”.

Leeds United teenager destined for big future

Liverpool attacker Harvey Elliott scored twice while Noni Madueke and Jaden Philogene also got on the scoresheet.

Gray is destined for a great career ahead, and it remains to be seen how long can Leeds hold on to him. The youngster plays with pride and passion for the Whites and has played a massive role in taking the club to the top of the Championship.

His meteoric rise has not gone unnoticed. The Daily Mail reported back in November that Liverpool have registered an interest in Gray and the Reds are even willing to pay over £40m for his signature.

However, Gray is focused on playing for Leeds only and has recently admitted that he wants to win trophies with the Yorkshire club. Since making his senior debut in the 2-2 draw against Cardiff on the opening day of the season, he has been a revelation for the club.

He is a top asset for the club, and Leeds must do everything to keep him unless any potential suitor come up with a ridiculous bid.
