West Ham had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday at the London Stadium.
The Hammers were denied two goals in the match including a late winner from Thomas Soucek and Richard Keys has slammed VAR for taking way too long to make major decisions.
In the dying minutes of the added time, Soucek thought he had won it for the Hammers, but it was ruled out after a lengthy VAR check that left everyone frustrated.
Michail Antonio scored a diving header to put West Ham ahead in the first half. The Villans restored parity with Nicolo Zaniolo scoring in the 79th minute.
Antonio had another goal ruled out for handball after the break, while Aston Villa were denied a penalty appeal after Emerson handled the ball in the box.
There was also a lengthy VAR check in Wolves vs Coventry in the FA Cup, and Keys thinks that it is “discourteous and arrogant” from the officials.
“And I can’t imagine how David Moyes is feeling this morning. One big handball decision after another has gone against his team in their last few games. The last of them took a record 5 minutes 37 seconds to sort out. What sort of madness is this?,” wrote Keys in his blog.
West Ham should have won the game
David Moyes was left furious after the game, although the video footage clearly showed that the decision to rule the goal out was right.
However, many pundits have felt that the VAR is ruining the thrill of the game. The lengthy delay only adds to more frustrations for both sets of fans, and this is not good for the game.
Many pundits have also questioned the inconsistency of decisions made by VAR throughout the season. It appears that football fans are now getting bored with technology, and unless there’s a major improvement it will only add to more frustrations.
The Hammers remain seventh in the Premier League while Villa stay at fourth, three points clear of Tottenham.
