Tottenham Hotspur produced a terrific second-half performance to secure a 2-1 victory over Luton Town in the Premier League on Saturday (30 March).
Spurs trailed by an early goal from Tahith Chong. However, they responded well after the break and one player who really impressed was Brennan Johnson.
The 22-year-old replaced Dejan Kulusevski at half-time and made an instant impact. His cross was turned into his own net by Issa Kabore as Spurs got the equalising goal in the 51st minute.
Alfie Doughty then prevented Johnson’s close-range effort as he gradually became the most influential player on the pitch in the second period. Eventually, his clever pass found Son Heung-Min in the 86th minute who made it 2-1.
It was Son’s 15th goal of the season as Tottenham once again showed tremendous fighting spirit under Ange Postecoglou. Speaking on Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports, Tim Sherwood was full of praise for Johnson and hailed him as “outstanding”.
“Tottenham can bring on players like Brennan Johnson, who came on at half time for Kulusevski. He was outstanding in the second half,” said Sherwood.
“Never sulked that he wasn’t starting. Rolled his sleeves and proved his manager that he deserves a start. I am sure he starts the next game because he was outstanding in the second period.”
Tottenham secure a hard-fought win
This is becoming a trend under Postecoglou. Spurs have now come from behind to pick up a win for the fourth time in their last five matches, which shows the belief among the players.
Spurs are doing their best to secure the fourth position in the league, and the victory will put pressure on the likes of Aston Villa and Manchester United.
The north London club enjoyed 70% of possession and registered 17 shots during the game. They were arguably the better side of the two but Luton gave a tough fight.
Johnson has now managed four goals and seven assists in the Premier League this season. He has been in very good form in recent months, and Sherwood is spot on that he deserves to start in the next game.
