West Ham line up bid for Man Utd defender Harry Maguire

West Ham may look to sign a new central defender in the summer transfer window and David Moyes could reignite interest in the player he failed to sign previously.

The Hammers were one of the clubs that showed keen interest in signing Manchester United defender Harry Maguire last summer. However, the deal didn’t materialize in the end, but Moyes is still keen to bring him to the London Stadium.

At one point, Maguire was badly struggling for game time under Erik ten Hag, but he has come back strongly. He showed his quality for club and country, and Gareth Southgate hailed him as “outstanding” for his performance against Italy.

The 31-year-old defender has made 13 starts in the Premier League this season, scoring one goal and providing two assists. According to a report from The Sun, Moyes feels that Maguire is the ideal man to bolster his defence.

West Ham lining up bid for Harry Maguire

The Hammers are lining up a bid for the England defender in the summer transfer window. He joined the Red Devils for the-then record fee of £85m in 2019, and West Ham could be willing to pay around £15-£20m for his signature.

Maguire is close to approaching the end of his lucrative contract and there is no indication that the Red Devils would offer him a new deal at Old Trafford.

He “may be more open to a deal in London”, and his sale could bring in money and free up the space for new arrivals.

The report claims that the Hammers could offer Maguire a two or three-year deal and it could be hard for him to refuse.

Any potential deal for Maguire is only possible if Moyes stays at the club. The Hammers boss is yet to commit to his future at the club, and there is no guarantee that he would stay beyond the end of the season.

In that case, if Moyes leaves, the next manager may not be willing to take a punt on Maguire.
