Alan Shearer blown away by Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah

Alan Shearer has praised Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah while speaking on The Rest is Football podcast

The 21-year-old defender has enjoyed a breakthrough season under Jurgen Klopp, and Shearer thinks the young talent has “huge potential” and is only going to get better.

Quansah has made seven starts in the Premier League and a further three appearances have come from the bench. He showed his quality while playing against Manchester City recently, and started in the 2-1 win over Brighton on Sunday.

When asked whether Quansah deserves to be in Gareth Southgate’s squad, pundits like Gary Lineker and Micah Richards suggested that while he is an “outstanding” player it’s too early for him to get into the England national team.

At the start of the season, Quansah wasn’t expecting to enjoy a breakthrough campaign, but the injury to Joel Matip has opened the door for him. He has grabbed the opportunity with both hands. Since producing an assured display against Wolves in September, he has earned Klopp’s trust.

What Alan Shearer has said about Quansah

Shearer said: “I like him. He has done really well. Watched him at the weekend against Brighton, struggled a bit in the first half, when Brighton let him have a lot of the ball.

“In the second half, he grew more into the game, brilliant, read it really well. Without doubt, I mean he has got huge potential. To be thrown into the pressure cooker at Liverpool and the way it’s going at the minute, he’s obviously got a lot about him. He is only going to get better.”

Quansah has made 23 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool and Klopp has admitted that the defender can’t be called a kid anymore. Liverpool are chasing Premier League and Europa League glory and Quansah is expected to play a big role for the rest of the season.

The Reds are leading the Premier League table by two points over Arsenal, and they will look to pick up all three points when they face Sheffield United at Anfield on Thursday night.

In other Liverpool news, the Reds could miss out on one of their top managerial target after latest development this week.
