Clinton Morrison blown away by Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta

Crystal Palace are now winless in their last five games in the Premier League as they lost 4-2 against Manchester City in the Premier League at Selhurst Park on Saturday.

The Premier League champions showed their class, but Oliver Glasner will be proud of the effort of his players, especially Jean-Philippe Mateta who was superb once again.

The 26-year-old striker has now scored in three games in a row and playing with loads of confidence. The French striker has struggled badly in previous years but has suddenly found a renewed belief under Glasner.

Clinton Morrison was heavily impressed by him and hailed him as “outstanding” on Soccer Saturday for Sky Sports. Glasner will be happy with Mateta’s overall contributions – his hold-up play and pressing have improved a lot, and it could be down to coaching.

“I don’t know what John Stones was doing because Mateta just beats him to the ball, shows good pace, Dias just can’t come over. He just drilled it, hits the post and goes into the far corner. It’s a great finish from Mateta,” said Morrison.

“He has been outstanding for Palace recently. He holds the ball ever so well. Fantastic finish.”

Three positives Crystal Palace can take from the defeat

Dean Henderson has been excellent

After Sam Johnstone got injured, he took his opportunities with both hands and has been impressive ever since.

The former Manchester United goalkeeper made some terrific saves during the game, including a big one-on-one save to deny Erling Haaland.

Cameo from Michael Olise and Odsonne Edouard

Palace hardly created anything in the second half with Eberechi Eze failing to make an impact. However, Michael Olise and Odsonne Edouard brought new life into the attack after coming from the bench.

Olise has been out for months, but he instantly made an impact after he played a lovely ball to Odsonne inside the box. He was lively with his movements and sharp passing, and Palace fans might be thinking what could have been if the 22-year-old had played the entire season.

Edouard scored the final goal, making a point to his manager that he still can be a crucial part of his long-term plans.

Adam Wharton impressed yet again

The 20-year-old was a January signing from Blackburn Rovers and yet he stepped up to the Premier League like he has been playing at this level for so many years.

He is such a joy to watch. The young midfielder has got a burst of energy, can put in defensive shifts, and can pick passes, as we saw in the build-up to the first goal.

Despite the defeat, Palace can take pride in the effort they have put in.
