We are in the middle of a thrilling race for promotion and anyone between Leeds United, Leicester City and Ipswich Town can secure the top two slots in the Championship.
Leeds maintained their impressive form in the Championship in 2024 as they remained unbeaten after beating Hull City 3-1 at Elland Road on Monday night.
Hull City were probably the better side of the two, but when it really mattered, the Whites peaked another gear with goals from Crysencio Summerville and Dan James earning them a precious 3-1 win.
As it stands, Ipswich Town are leading the table with 87 points from 40 games. Leeds are second with 86 points from 40 games. Leicester are third with 85 points from 39 games, and they can move to the top if they win their game in hand.
The Easter Monday football saw Leicester coming from behind to secure a thrilling 3-1 win over Norwich City. Ipswich scored in the dying seconds of the match to win 3-2 against Southampton.
Darren Bent was asked to pick two teams he thinks will secure automatic promotion. The pundit said on talkSPORT that he thinks Leeds and Ipswich Town are likely to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.
Bent makes Championship automatic promotion prediction
He said: “I have got Leeds because at the minute, I wouldn’t say plan particularly well, but they are finding a way to get results.
“When you look at their so-called front five, with Summerville, Bamford and Rutter, I just feel they’ve got the best five in the league. I am going to go with Leeds and Ipswich.”
The Whites still remain the only side in the Championship who have not lost a single game at Elland Road. Against Hull City, they struggled against possession-based football, but still managed to pick up all three points.
Leicester were leading by 17 points from Leeds at the start of the year. While they can make the best use of their game in hand, the Foxes have dropped too many points, and the worrying trend could continue in the coming weeks.
It will be some story if Ipswich make it to the Premier League, and they have won the hearts of neutrals this season with their fearless approach. The win over Southampton will give them a massive boost, and Kieran McKenna deserves huge credit for the job he has done.
