Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer react as Liverpool suffer 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Anfield

Liverpool saw their Premier League title hopes suffer a huge blow following a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace at Anfield on Sunday, with Eberechi Eze’s 14th-minute goal enough to condemn them to their third league defeat of the 2023-24 campaign.

The Reds headed into the game in third place in the table after Manchester City moved into first position on Saturday following a commanding 5-1 victory over Luton Town, and Liverpool were expected to reply and move into second after they lost 3-0 to Atalanta on Thursday at Anfield in the first-leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie.

However, Palace had other ideas and were close to doubling their lead shortly after Eze’s opener, only for Andy Robertson to clear Jean-Philippe Mateta’s effort off the line.

The huge clearance was not enough as Liverpool failed to find a reply, with an effort from Wataru Endo hitting the bar.

The Reds had 70% ball possession, attempted 21 shots, four big chances and had six shots on target, but they were not clinical enough when it mattered most, and the defeat to Palace could be the reason why they end up losing the title this term.

Liverpool were in the race for the quadruple a couple of weeks ago but will now likely settle for one trophy, and here is how Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer reacted on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) following the game.

With two points between them and Man City after 32 games, Liverpool will be lucky to find themselves back in the conversation for the title as Arsenal can go three points clear if they beat Aston Villa at Emirates later today.

They return to action on Thursday when they visit Italy for the second-leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash against Atalanta before resuming their Premier League campaign against Fulham at Craven Cottage next weekend.
