Gary Lineker left stunned by Alexis Mac Allister goal in Liverpool win v Sheffield United

Liverpool moved to the top of the Premier League after beating Sheffield United 3-1 at Anfield on Thursday night.

The Blades silenced the Anfield crowd after levelling in the 58th minute, but Alexis Mac Allister produced a moment of magic by scoring from 20 yards out to put the Reds ahead.

Jurgen Klopp hailed the Argentine midfielder – who won the World Cup with his country – as a “wonderful” player after the game.

Liverpool dominated the possession and took an early lead inside 20 minutes through Darwin Nunez, who charged down goalkeeper Ivo Grbic, whose clearance rebounded into the net.

The Reds wasted numerous chances and paid the price when Gustavo Hamer’s header bounced off Conor Bradley into his own net shortly after the break. When Anfield was searching for inspiration, Mac Allister stepped up and scored a wonder goal to break Sheffield’s resilience.

Cody Gakpo added another goal in the 90th minute as Liverpool picked up a comfortable win.

Gary Lineker was left stunned by the strike from Mac Allister, and he took to X to share his reaction. “What a strike from Mac Allister. Ooosh!”, he wrote.

Liverpool responded strongly as the title race hots up

Mac Allister was outstanding in the previous game against Brighton, and he stepped up with another top-class performance. In the absence of Wataru Endo, Mac Allister was used in the defensive midfield role.

However, in the second half, and especially after the Baldesd equalised, Mac Allister played slightly high up the pitch and changed the course of the game with a lovely goal.

Andy Robertson also looked sharp after coming from the bench and he provided the assist for Gakpo’s goal. The Scotsman nearly scored himself after Harvey Elliott found him in the box but he couldn’t hit the target.

Curtis Jones also returned to the side, and he played his part as well. With this victory, the Reds are now two points clear of Arsenal and three ahead of Manchester City, with only eight games left to play.
