James Pearce shares latest update as Liverpool chase Ruben Amorim

Liverpool are taking the time, and rightly so, in appointing their next manager.

Jurgen Klopp will leave the club at the end of the season after a nine-year stay, and appointing the perfect candidate to replace him is not an easy task.

Club CEO Michael Edwards and Sporting Director Richard Hughes are doing a thorough check behind the scenes, and Sporting Lisbon manager Ruben Amorin is emerging as a strong candidate.

Liverpool have reportedly approached him through intermediaries, while Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg claimed on Monday (9 April) that the 39-year-old has already reached “verbal agreement” with the Reds.

However, James Pearce of The Athletic has claimed on X that while Amorim remains a “strong contender” for the Liverpool job, “senior club sources” are adamant that he hasn’t been offered the job yet, and there has been no verbal agreement as a result.

“Amorim clearly a strong contender for Liverpool job but senior club sources adamant he hasn’t been offered the job, no verbal agreement etc. Club still doing due diligence around a number of viable candidates,” he wrote.

Liverpool should take time to make right decision

Replacing Klopp is a huge job, and Liverpool must not rush to make the next appointment. With Edwards in charge, that is unlikely to happen, given his track record of meticulous selection process.

Amorim is doing a fantastic job at Sporting, and they are on course to lift the second league title in successive seasons.

The Portuguese boss has hinted that he could leave Sporting in the summer, and there is a high probability that he might end up moving to Anfield. But as of now, it looks like reports floating about him are wide of the mark.

Liverpool are in the middle of a fascinating title race, and the Reds need to win their next seven games (and hope Arsenal and Man City drop points) to lift the Premier League for the second time under Klopp. Even if the Reds are looking to secure the appointment of their next manager, they won’t make it public as it could hamper their present season.
